HOLE 3:

DRESS CODE

If you like to shop, this is the fun part! Most golf courses have a dress code, and they can vary from very traditional to a bit more relaxed. Be sure to research the requirements at your selected course to avoid an extra purchase in the pro shop or an embarrassing moment if you are asked to change. In this section, you will learn basics about golf dress code and find information about selecting apparel that is comfortable and flattering. As a FastTrack golfer, you'll also have access to exclusive discounts from some of our favorite fashion-forward designers!

THE GOLF POWER SUIT

Introduction

Many women are attracted to golf so they can access the informal business networks that form outside the office.  In some corporate cultures, playing golf is a ticket to the inner circle where executives discuss and make important business decisions.  Just as we take care to choose outfits that makes us feel powerful and confident for an interview or presentation, dressing for a round of golf with business associates or potential clients is no different.

Even as a beginner, you will feel more confident if you choose a “power suit” for business golf occasions. Quite often, you’ll be surrounded by men, so kicking your attire up a notch will help you stand out and be taken seriously.

Before you select an outfit, review the dress code for the golf course you are planning to play.  Dress codes vary from club to club, and you'll often find specifics on the club website.  When in doubt, give the pro shop a call.

Selecting a Golf Outfit

STYLE

With more women playing golf every year, designers have responded with a wide variety of fashionable mix-and-match collections.  Look for transitional pieces that will carry you into the clubhouse for dinner – you may even have something in your closet.

Think of your outfit as an extension of the professional style you keep in the office.  Go for skorts or capris over shorts, and you'll instantly have a dressier look.  Pick tailored or sporty pieces over more casual weekend wear.  And add color!  Bright colors, patterns or some sparkle can reflect your personal tastes.  And by all means, consider a golf dress for easy one-piece dressing.

FIT and COMFORT

There are times when you are in the spotlight – like on the tee box – so it’s best to check your reflection from all angles.  Golf is a game of movement, so be sure your clothing and footwear is geared for sport.  When you swing, is your top long enough?  Does it bind around the waist?  And when you bend down, does your skirt provide enough coverage?  Look for fabrics with stretch and technical properties – such as moisture wicking fabric – to keep your clothing looking fresh throughout your round.

Your shoes should be comfortable as well.  Even if you’re riding in a cart, you'll do a fair amount of walking on the course.

ACCESSORIZE

All smart executives are prepared for meetings.  Golf is no different.  Think of your golf bag as your briefcase and stock it with everything you’ll need – sunscreen, bug spray, tissues.  Consider bringing accessories that will add to your polished look, like a new glove, towel or hat.  Don’t forget to prepare for changing weather conditions – you may need an extra layer for warmth or rain gear if the skies decide to open up.

AVOID

When your goal is to present a more professional look, avoid denim, halter tops, short shorts and plunging necklines.
