HOLE 3:

DRESS CODE

If you like to shop, this is the fun part! Most golf courses have a dress code that can vary from very traditional to a bit more relaxed. Be sure to research the requirements at your selected course to avoid an extra purchase in the pro shop or an embarrassing moment if you are asked to change. In this section you will learn about the golf dress code and find information about selecting apparel that is comfortable and flattering. As a FastTrack golfer we have arranged apparel savings from some of our favorite fashion forward designers!

WHAT TO WEAR

Introduction

Despite the focused preparation that goes into learning golf skills, the question women ask most often is, "What do I wear?”

Looking fantastic increases our confidence – and confidence is half the battle in almost everything we do. Whether it’s trying a new sport or making an important business presentation, dressing for success is a must!

Women on Course puts an emphasis on preparing women to show up on the golf course with confidence  - and what you wear is a big part of the game.  Would you rather be perceived as someone comfortable in a golf setting, or draw unwanted attention because you’re not properly dressed?  If you’re playing golf for business, your outfit can support your image as the charismatic leader that you are, or work against you as someone unprepared and out of your comfort zone.

Fit, style and comfort are not only essential for the active part of the game, but they also play a key role in your mental game.  When you stand on the first tee box all eyes are upon you.  And that is intimidating enough!  You want to be focused on your golf swing and making ball contact - not thinking that your shorts are too tight.  You get the picture.

Most golf courses and practice facilities enforce a dress code and standards vary from club to club.  A quick call to the golf course to confirm the rules in advance will avoid the extra expense and embarrassment of a last minute purchase in the pro shop.

Did you know that a first impression is usually made in seven seconds?   Here are some pointers to use that time to your advantage.

Start at the Top

When people think of golf, the traditional polo shirt paired with khaki shorts come to mind as "the uniform". That is only somewhat true.

As a general rule, a collar is required with a sleeveless top.  If the top has sleeves, a collar is not required. Tank tops, graphic tee shirts and halter tops are typically not allowed.

Within these guidelines, you have a vast array of necklines, styles and patterns to choose from.  Have some fun with it!  Pick colors and patterns that not only reflect your personal style, but that are also appropriate for the type of golf activity you're attending.  Take a practice swing to make sure your top is long enough so it remains tucked in or keeps you covered up.

Dressing in layers is common, as weather conditions may change dramatically over a four hour round of golf.  A long sleeve mock neck can be worn under polos to help keep the morning chill off your arms.  A pair of leggings worn under a skort can be removed as the day heats up.  Vests are popular for added warmth, as they allow your arms to swing freely.  For cooler weather, choose sweaters, jackets and pullover options in stretch fabrics that offer full mobility.

The Bottom Line

There are many great choices for the bottom half of your golf outfit: traditional Bermuda shorts, full length trousers, capris, modern knee shorts and skirts.  A SKORT is a popular option for golf, which is a hybrid between a skirt and a short.  Under the skirt is a matching booty short that provides coverage while participating in an athletic activity.  Choose a length and style that suits your body type and fits the golf occasion.

As a general rule shorts, skirts and skorts should be no more than two inches above the knee.  Typically the more elite the club, the more conservative the dress code will be.  When in doubt, call ahead or check the website for a written dress code.  Jeans, leggings, cargo shorts or pants, yoga pants, and sweat pants are typically not allowed.

Dress Up

Dresses designed for golf are becoming more popular.  They are stylish, cool and comfortable, and they easily transition from the office to the golf course.  Golf dresses typically come with a matching booty short, although you may need to provide your own matching slim short underneath.  The same standards apply for the top and bottom half: a sleeveless dress requires a collar, and the bottom hem must be two inches or less above the knee.

When selecting a dress, avoid fussy features that might get in the way of your golf swing and look for fabrics with stretch to allow for a full range of motion.

Best Foot Forward

Just as running shoes make a difference in a 5K race, a great fitting pair of golf shoes will make a difference in your game.  Shoes designed for golf provide stability, traction and proper balance during a golf swing.

Golf shoes with "soft" plastic spikes or a molded spiked bottom are the most common.  More traditional styles will have a soft, pliable leather upper-shoe, which is great for all seasons and playing conditions. There are also lightweight, nylon uppers that are ideal for hot summer days and travel.  You can even find sandals made for golf.  They have the same sole as a traditional golf shoe and can be worn without socks.  Of course, all of these options come in a terrific assortment of colors and styles.

Most courses will allow sneakers, but avoid wearing a pair that is overly cushioned on the bottom so that you are level with the ground.

Underneath the Outfit

Golf is an active sport that involves moving your entire body.  Choosing the right foundation will allow you to be athletic while keeping you comfortable and cool.  Forgo any lacy undergarments and opt for a well fitted, smooth, full coverage bra or sports bra.  You definitely want to avoid straps slipping down your shoulders as you swing.  In warm weather, opt for lightweight materials with little to no padding.

On the bottom, choose a style that won't create embarrassing panty lines.  If you choose to wear slimming underpants, be sure they are the proper fit and won't create “muffin top” or roll down unexpectedly as you swing.  Keep in mind that your playing partners will often be viewing your backside as you step up to the tee box, so check out your appearance from all angles before you leave home!

Finishing Touches

Many golfers choose to wear a golf glove, which is specifically made for the sport and designed to better grip the club.  A glove is usually worn on the lead hand of the grip.  Right handed players wear a glove on the left hand, and left handed players wear a glove on the right hand.

Baseball caps, visors and sun hats not only provide necessary protection from the sun, but also keep you cooler during your round.

Fabrics and Features

As you build your golf wardrobe, choose styles and fabrics that are functional as well as transitional.  Look for technical fabrics that wick away moisture, stretch as you move, and offer SPF sun protection.  Be sure to evaluate the number and depth of pockets so that you can keep an extra golf ball, golf tees and a ball marker handy.
