I recently began a mission to find the perfect pair of golf shoes. The right shoes are so important to playing well, and yet, and yet, I must have shoes that strike the right fashion note as well. So, due to the fact that retail shopping makes me cringe, I have now, sitting before me about 12 pairs of shoes ordered off the net. Is there a perfect one in the bunch? First of all, let’s talk about what to look for in golf footwear.
- Comfort! You may be walking the entire course in these babies which in a typical round will be about 5 miles up, down and around. Make sure they are like walking on air.
- Breathability. What I mean is that in the sweltering heat of summer (when most of us play) the feet arena can become, shall we say, steamy. Look for terms like “moisture wicking” technology and “sweat zapper lining”, to stay fresh and dry.
- Waterproofing. I recently became more of a golf maniac when I found myself out on a course in 45 degree weather playing, happily, in a drizzle. Of course we were the only players on the resort course that morning. I wore an old pair of shoes thinking not to ruin my lovely more recently purchased and terribly fashionable pair, and realized too late that they did not have the waterproofing technology that my newer pair did. My round was a bit water-logged. As pretty as they are these shoes are made for just those conditions – no more “saving” shoes. By the way, get a rain suit too…
- Stability. The shoes should hold your feet in position during your swing. As such the fit is really critical. You should not feel any sliding or movement in your shoes when you are swinging your club. You should have a snug, comfortable feeling in your shoes. Experiment with different styles and heel heights until you have what feels natural to you.
- Adorableness. Well, afterall I am the Fashion Director so I can’t resist a cute pair of shoes. I like having a wardrobe of shoes to choose from so I suggest starting with a neutral pair of white shoes (they go with anything), adding a black/white or brown/ivory depending on the colors in your golf wardrobe and then you should dive into the world of color.
So what did I end up with? My perfect shoe is a really cute sneaker-like blue and white little number from Nike. Oh and a white quilted leather with a zipper closure from Callaway. I almost forgot the Adidas pair that makes my heart flutter…
